2009 Fishing Report Contact 916-496-7435 email Jon Reuer at:
November 26, 2009 - Happy Thanksgiving! Today we made our 2nd trip of the year to Tisdale. It was a perfect day on the water, not a breath of wind, no fog and much to our delight a couple of biting salmon. My son Parker who just turned 10 years hooked, fought and landed his first ever King. It was a beautiful 16lb hen that fell for a blue and white double bladed silvertron spinner. The line ripped out from 75 to 180 feet by the time we got the lines cleared and boat turned. That one got bonked and back up the river we went. We didn't go another 200 yards and the inside rod got whacked again. Diana took control and did an outstanding job in landing her first King in a couple of years. Another dime bright hen that went about 12lbs after falling for a yellow double bladed silvertron. All in all a great way to spend a Thanksgiving morning with family and friends.
November 16, 2009 - Opening Day of our limited King Salmon season kicked off with a bang. The parking lot at Tisdale was nearly full at 6:15 this morning but all were gracious and cordial. Most people trolled down river with some version of their favorite spinner while others anchored up with other presentations. There were many fish caught today up and down the river. In my boat we landed a dime bright 17lb male that was full of fight nearly getting my reel to its backing before we turned to chase him. Aaron Zanocco had six on his boat and reported in with limits by 9:45am... That's right limits!! It's worth trying. November 1, 2009 - Finally some good fishing!!! Now that hopefully the big wind has decided to finally lay down we have had some good fishing days in the Delta. The outgoing tide seems to be the ticket because the incoming still remains too dirty to troll. On Sunday we had team Folsom Chevrolet out for their second trip of the year and they didn't disappoint us. We ran in to large schools of fish on a couple of spots and wore them out for limits of fish on the troll. It should only get better until the big rains come.
October 10, 2009 - Big wind and scattered fish in the Delta right now. For some reason the fish just haven't schooled up tight yet this fall. Perhaps the inconsistent weather has caused some of that. We are starting to see the water temperatures reach the mid sixties which is a good sign. The bite should bust loose just about any day so don't miss out... September 21, 2009 - Hit the Delta today out of Brannan Island and found lots and lots of small fish. We plugged fish traps, rattle traps, big swim baits, pencil poppers etc in Franks Tract for 30+ fish. All but 4 were shakers which included an 18lber caught by Mike on a pearl fish trap. I'd say the water was dirty in most of the areas today and the temperature was getting hot so off the water early. Starting to have signs of life so the good stuff isn't likely too far away.. September 13, 2009 - Tough fishing. Winds blowing, water temps still a little high, we need some cooler and calmer weather to get back to wacking em in the Delta. Launched the boat out of Wimpy's this morning after battling traffic for nearly 2 hours and hit all the usual spots. Finally landed on a few fish near B&W resort trolling shallow. Lots of witches hair so it was tough to get in a good troll. Decided to head back to the ramp up the South Mok and plugged a few different spots on the way in. Picked up a couple more including a nice 6lber. All in all slow reports from most people patiently waiting for the cooler weather and more fish. August 15, 2009 - There are lots and lots of stripers moving their way back in to the Delta right now. On the first three scouting missions we ran in to many nice schools of fish up to 11 pounds. The fish are tight together so we've experienced lots of doubles and triples so far this season. Once you find em on the right tide you'll get em good for a short while. Once they stop biting we move to the next spot where the tide should be right and get em again. I expect that in just another week or so we should be able to start counting on getting nice limits of fish from now until when the river gets muddy from the rains. It's going to be a great fall run..... book a date soon. August 7, 2009 - It's Striper Time again!!! I just love saying that! The bass have begun their annual migration back in to the delta after fattening up in the bay and along the beaches. We target these hard fighting fish along the edges of sandbars where there are laying in wait of any poor unsuspecting bait fish or our plugs to swim on by. The only problem with the Delta right now is getting out there on a day where the wind lays down long enough to get to the good spots. July 23, 2009 - Here it is nearly the end of July. We are already getting excited about the return of our Striper fishing in the Delta. I think that once August rolls around and we get a decent set of tides we will begin chasing them again on both the Sac and San Juaq sides of the Delta near Rio Vista. Stay tuned!! There has been a decent Striper bite on the Feather but you have to be in the know of where, when and what techniques to make a decent outing. June 19, 2009 - Well the Striper bite has certainly slowed down as far as fishing the Delta and or the upper river. It looks like our Pro Staffers will be taking a break and hitting the lakes for the Kokes, Salmon and Trout for a couple of months until the Striper bite kicks back in to high gear in mid to late August. Don't forget that before you know it, it's gonna be Waterfowl season. We hunt some of the best flooded rice and timber in the valley so get ready. May 18, 2009 - Last week the big shot of rain we had finally dirtied up the water enough to make for some difficult fishing. The Yuba River peaked out at over 20K cfs for a while which really turned the river brown. Couple that ugly brown rolling mud and the huge tides it wasn't worth trying. So we waited for the water to clear a bit and the bite turned back on. Up the river in the Colusa area it was a wide open bite if you found the fish. In the Delta if you found the fish you could catch mostly spawned out males with a larger female in the occasional mix. It's getting toward the end of the striper run now with just perhaps a couple of weeks left of good fishing. May 4, 2009 - Back at it on the Delta that past few days chasing Stripers. This weather? Seems like November again with cooler temperatures, cloudy overcast skies, and even some pretty good rain on Sunday. The tides were very conducive to trolling and the wind even laid down for the most part which gave us a great chance at fish. The numbers weren't as high as we'd like but there were lots of quality fish landed with our largest being the big girl of the year so far at 25lbs. Of course caught and released!
April 28, 2009 - What a difference a week makes in Northern California. Last weekend the air temperature was in the upper 90's for several straight days, then this week we've seen temperatures drop to the mid 60's. Weird, wild and wacky stuff!!!! Along with the changing weather the tides were some of the largest of the year and that shut down what was shaping up to be an unbelievable trolling bite. Sunday the boys from Folsom Lake Chevy service department jumped on board for the 3rd straight year and experienced some decent fishing. We didn't find the numbers we'd been catching but the fish we caught were good ones. All in all our 2 boats landed around 15 fish to 15 lbs. On my boat Joey age 12 had the hot hand. He set the hook on what turned out to be a nice 15lber, while fighting that fish his dad Ron began to reel in the other rod on that side of the boat and BAM a double hookup, Dad's fish was just shy of his son's but a respectable 11lbs. At one point a very large Sea Lion was monitoring the action of Joey's fish but he was able to get it in before being chomped. Good job Joey! On Monday the bite was just as tough with the tides even bigger and Len and Joe were able to land 7 fish to 8lbs. All our fish have been caught shallow trolling on both the SJ and Sac rivers.
April 21, 2009 - Just got back from 4 straight days of fishing out of Brannan Island. It was very hot over the weekend, the water was clear, the wind cooperated and so did the fish. All said and done we landed 49 fish in 4 short days (we were back at the trailer enjoying the air conditioner by noon each day). So many worm stealers that I had to make a road trip to re-stock midway through the trip, and there were even some nice fish with the largest going a tad over 15lbs. I think we had nearly 10 for the trip that went over 10lbs. Even caught a nice topwater bite late Sunday afternoon in to the dark and landed and released 2 very nice 12lbers. Jamie did a nice job on his personal best fish of 15lbs while trolling the west bank, then not an hour later backed that one up with an 11lber (which an hour earlier would have been his personal best). Check em out and get on board we still have some good dates available and this action should last in to June. norcaloutdoorguides@yahoo.com
April 13, 2009 - The wind subsided for a couple of days, the tides were big in the Delta but we took a chance anyway. Slept in for a while and got on the water Monday at 11:30 in hopes to catch the bottom the ripping 5 foot tide. As suspected the bite was slow to begin but heated up once the tide slowed and began to turn coming in. After getting away from the other boats we found a school of fish that just loved our shallow running yozuri's. There was just one other boat around and we wore out a 200 yard stretch of river for about an hour and half and landed 23 fish to 12lbs. At one point we even stopped trolling and tossed fish traps but to no avail, they wanted the yozuri's trolled and trolled fast. It's just going to get better this week as the tides slow down. Reports from upriver are limits, to near limits each day drifting minnows above and below the Wards Landing area. I can put you on board for an outstanding trip just shoot me an email at norcaloutdoorguides@yahoo.com
April 7, 2009 - After a couple of big wind days that kept us off the water we hit the Rio Vista area from some very good Striper fishing the past couple of days. On Monday we landed the big fish of the year so far on my boat at 23lbs. Mike's second fish over 20 in a couple years fishing with us. All fish have been caught on shallow running yozuri's from Vierra's to the San Joaquin side of the rivers. There are a lot of small males on the prowl right now but the big girls are on their way. Please remember to let the big females live to spawn and protect our resource! Take a pic and let her go. Reports from up river by Aaron Zanocco have been good as well. To book a trip shoot me an email and I'll get you on board for some of this awesome action. norcaloutdoorguides@yahoo.com
March 27, 2009 - The water is clearing and the fishing is heating up from the Bay all the way up the river for Sturgeon and Stripers. Check out the pictures of the action so far this month!
March 1, 2009 - Finally some good rain is falling in the valley and the lakes and rivers are starting to get the much needed water necessary for good fishing. Folsom Lake now has enough water that they have lifted the 5mph restriction for the first time since 4th of July weekend. With all the water coming down the river is dirty and running high but that's good news for both the Stripers and Sturgeon bite that's coming very soon. Striper trips from Colusa to the Delta trolling, tossing plugs, drifting minnows etc will be sure and fill the coolers with limits of fish. Sturgeon fishing in the Colusa area is an all nighter. We launch the boats in the late afternoon, head to our favorite spots, anchor up for the night and wait for that dino bite. February 3, 2009 - It's getting to be that time of year again when the Delta Striper bite is gettin good! Today on the Mok we found some diving birds that showed us the way to a huge school of stripers. The Lowrance couldn't find bottom for all the fish stacked up in 26 feet of water. We tied on the spoons and for the next hour hooked over 40 fish landing many fish with the largest going 12lbs. It was one of those great days you dream of. The fish we cleaned were full, and had been gorging themselves on steelhead. The weather being what it is I don't expect the water to brown from anything but a bunch of rain. We will be on the Delta, Sac and Feather River stripers until at least June now!
January 20, 2009 - Hope everyone is doing well and here's to a safe and Happy New Year! The Nor Cal Outdoor Guides Pro Staffers have been hitting the fields hard the last couple of months Waterfowling (check out the pics on the front page and the Waterfowl page). Now that the season will end this weekend we will be focusing our efforts on Delta Stripers, Colusa area Sturgeon, and Wild Pig Hunting. These are all great trips so give us a call or an email!
